Time for another club fundraiser and social. In celebration of Shrove Tuesday we are hosting a Pancake Supper.

Come and indulge in your choice of mouth-watering pancakes and special toppings on Tuesday, February 21^st Supper will be served after evening training, price £5.

Safety and care on the river

Please note the different points below regarding rowing safety on the river heading into the Winter.

Unless you have passed the steersman’s test ( and you will know if you have been out and assessed!!!!!!!!!!) then you must not be steering even a single by yourself. There is a test for singles , doubles and quads It doesn’t mean you can take a quad if you have only been assessed in a single!!!

Remember we pass port to port

Ditton Bend is a “blind” bend if you are coming downstream and so keep well in and do not stop on the bend for any reason and remember on a Sunday morning that Skiffs stop on this bend after they have raced.

The stream WILL increase sooner or later – once the stream is running faster you must compete a risk assessment before you go out especially at night

Check for red boards – no rowing on red or yellow at night

Night rowing – there seems to be a feeling that a new rule has been introduced i have just rechecked with the EA and the rule is ” a bright solid white light on bow and stern”

IF you want to go out at night – you must check with jock for his agreement that you are capable unless you are in an organised outing with a coaching launch

Fog- you must be able to see the far bank CLEARLY the other week there were cruisers out in the fog – the closing speed is huge when you cant see them and there is no way they can see you in the fog and often they are not in the right bit of the river!!!!!!

Learn to Row Course

Come and learn to row in a fun safe environment with a qualified British Rowing Coach. Courses run in the daytime on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting 1st November and 3rd November for 8 weeks.
All ages welcome. You will need to be able to swim 50m in light PE clothing and have a sense of fun!

“Give me more length” Cris recalls his race

“Give me more length” Jen, our coxswain gently urges at about 1000 metres into our coxed fours race at Weybridge Winter Head. At Vet (Masters) F it’s hard enough to keep a strike rate of 32 for 3k but to expect more length just shows the sadistic streak a really good cox needs. And, we all know that with the last 500m to go Jen will call for us to take the rate up to 36 and apply all the leg power we can.

Victorious Vets!

The day started well with an enthusiastic buzz around the Walton Rowing Club Car Park. Walbrook had three eights, a ladies, a IM3 and a Vet F men’s, two men’s fours, a Vet E composite and a Vet F Men’s coxed, a junior coxed Quad, a ladies Quad and a Double, as well as a couple of our ladies in a composite. I was tremendous to have so many Walbrook participants, and to get four wins. The newly formed senior men’s eight had a fine result but just missed the ultimate price by 8 seconds.

“Up two, in two, and full pressure for twenty” Jen called as we entered the Desborough Cut, we were closing, and had been from the start on Maidstone Invicta (Vet E), and passed them in twenty strokes then closed in on Guildford’s Vet D crew (mere youngsters at an average age of 50). Apparently we maintained 32 over the whole course with spurts of 36. It was good to beat the opposition, not on handicap but on water time.

However, Matt Evans, our excellent coach, will not let us rest, for we have to start more serious training for the Molesey Vets Head on the 26^th February when we know the competition will be fierce.

Wins For Walbrook at Weybridge Head

It was a calm sunny morning with a slight headwind and a little stream. No problems with equipment or last minute substitutions, everyone arrived on time, eventually, and ready to go. The WJ16 4X- crew had to borrow a boat from St.Georges college as we had difficulties getting all our boats to the event, many thanks must go to Diane Graham and Gareth, head coach at St.Georges, for sorting out the trailing and boat loan.

Some lessons have been learned about what it is and it is not possible to get on the trailers!

Everyone enjoyed their day racing and our six winning results presageth well for the oncoming season.

Mens Vet VIII in training

Walbrook Vet men have been training regularly over the past couple of months and the VIII is now moving nicely. The squad of 12 now train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with a Saturday morning session at the weekends. A race program is now organised for the coming season.

Men’s Master Squad – Past Successes

The Walbrook Men’s Master squad has been one of the country’s most successful, regularly contesting for medals at the National Masters Championships, Henley Masters and FISA Masters regattas. Past successes include;
