Learn to Row

Why not learn to row? We encourage and welcome enquiries from both adults and juniors who are looking to try this exciting sport. Our “Learn to Row” courses are a great way to get fit, make new friends and, of course, find out if rowing is for you. We’re confident that you’ll love the sport as much as we do and will want to continue and join one of our club squads.

We have now finished our learn to row courses for 2017. Please contact us to put your name down for our 2018 courses

Course Details

Our Learn to Row course in 2018 will be  held on Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings and consists of twelve lessons over 6 weeks costing only £165. You'll learn the basic skills on an indoor rowing machine, but we aim to get you out on the water as soon as possible. You'll also learn rowing terminology, the rowing safety code and how the Boathouse functions. If you decide that rowing is for you after the introductory course then you can join our improvers/novice section with sessions on a Saturday and Sunday at 7.45am. As soon as you are able you will be rowing with our racing novice section. Payment and regsitration can be made via our on-line system (4% fee). Please note we do not take credit card payments.

 What will you need?

All you need is a t-shirt and shorts or a tracksuit if it’s a little chillier, a drink for hydration and spare clothes/towel. It can get cold on the water so make sure you have sufficient layers to keep you warm.

Level of Fitness

Everyone is welcome; our Learn to Row lessons are for beginners, whether they are fit or not. Getting fit is something you can build on if you decide to join Walbrook. Some people want to race, in which case it is necessary to train and keep your fitness levels up. However, if you are planning on becoming a recreational rower (and just want to enjoy the freedom the river gives you and the camaraderie a club like Walbrook provides), then your level of fitness will not need to be as high.

Who will coach you?

You’ll be coached by a qualified rowing coach, who is extremely experienced in coaching rowers of all ages and abilities.  Over the course of your lessons we hope you will meet other members of the club and integrate into the appropriate Walbrook squad if you decide to become a full-time club member.

Anything else I need to know?
In order to be able to become a club member you have to sign a form stating that you can swim 100m in light clothing.
