Learn to Row

Why not learn to row? We encourage and welcome enquiries from both adults and juniors who are looking to try this exciting sport. Our “Learn to Row” courses are a great way to get fit, make new friends and, of course, find out if rowing is for you. We’re confident that you’ll love the sport as much as we do and will want to continue and join one of our club squads.

Please contact us to put your name down for our 2018 courses

Course Details

The course fee is £200 for 8 sessions. As rowing builds on technique built in the previous week we do ask that participants attend all 8 sessions. We are unable to offer “catch up” sessions if a week is missed. The course outline is attached, but speed of progression will depend on the participants and the coach will judge when the group is ready to move on to develop different aspects.Course outline

Please register and pay for the course via the link https://paysubsonline.com/ThirdpartyRegistration.aspx?clubID=371d0b39f6fc4ad64bcf34a94c4b4be8

Unless you have registered and paid for the course before your first session you will be unable to start the course. There will be a facility to register and payonline at the beginning of session 1 – please arrive at 9.45 if you would like to do this at that time. We accept cheques or credit card. (payment by credit card is £210  i.e. there is a £10 discount for payment by cheque.)

We are offering 2 courses of 8 sessions of Saturday mornings to be taken over the following  period at 10.00am – 11.30am.

1)      Saturday 14th April to Saturday 16th  June at 10.00am – 11.30am – please note no session Bank Holiday weekends.

2)      Saturday 9th June – Saturday 28th July at 10.00 – 11.30am

At the end of the course you can discuss with the coach whether you are ready to join the improvers sessions or whether you should take another course of 8 learn to row sessions.

  • The Improvers course commences Wednesday 20th June – Wednesday 29th August (11 weeks)  6.30pm – 8.30pm at a cost of £220 as long as we have at least 2 people wishing to sign up.
  • Please note that due to the complex nature of  rowing it is very unlikely that you will have progressed enough to be able to pass our steersman’s test at the end of an 8 week course. This is required to take a boat out alone.

 What will you need?

All you need is a t-shirt and shorts or a tracksuit if it’s a little chillier, a drink for hydration and spare clothes/towel. It can get cold on the water so make sure you have sufficient layers to keep you warm.

Level of Fitness

Everyone is welcome; our Learn to Row lessons are for beginners, whether they are fit or not. Getting fit is something you can build on if you decide to join Walbrook. Some people want to race, in which case it is necessary to train and keep your fitness levels up. However, if you are planning on becoming a recreational rower (and just want to enjoy the freedom the river gives you and the camaraderie a club like Walbrook provides), then your level of fitness will not need to be as high.

Who will coach you?

You’ll be coached by a qualified rowing coach, who is extremely experienced in coaching rowers of all ages and abilities.  Over the course of your lessons we hope you will meet other members of the club and integrate into the appropriate Walbrook squad if you decide to become a full-time club member.

Anything else I need to know?
In order to be able to become a club member you have to sign a form stating that you can swim 100m in light clothing.
